İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nın son günlerinde, kayıp asker ve sivillerden oluşan bir grup insan buharlı bir trende buluşur. Bazıları Tanrı'ya inancını korurken kimi de yazgısına boyun eğmiştir. Ancak cepheden; insanın kötülüğünün damgasını vurduğu bu dünyadan kaçma çabası umutsuz bir girişimdir. Dünyayı Leviathan adlı canavar yaratmış, onun yırtıcı doğası insanoğluna geçmiştir. 1951 tarihli Kara Aynalar'da ise Üçüncü Dünya Savaşı'nın yol açtığı kıyametin ardından sağ kalan bir adam yeryüzünde tek başına dolaşır durur.
