- タンパク質は核酸から作られる 私たちの身体を構成する約37兆個の細胞は、古くなった細胞を新しい細胞にリニューアルすることは知られていますが、細胞が分裂する際、真っ先に分かれる細胞核の中に存在する「核酸」のことはあまり知られていません。 人間の身体は約20％のタンパク質（水分約60％、その他約20％）からできています。皮膚や筋肉、骨や臓器は、食事から摂取したタンパク質が体内でアミノ酸に分解され、全身に運ばれてそれぞれの部位で再合成されています。このタンパク質の合成になくてはならないのが「核酸」です。 核酸とはDNA（デオキシリボ核酸）とRNA（リボ核酸）のことを呼び、DNAが持つ遺伝子情報をRNAが複製しています。DNAの情報をもとにアミノ酸を結合させて、タンパク質を合成するのがRNAです。ヒトゲノムの解析で判明した塩基配列はおよそ30億にも上ります。DNAが傷ついたり劣化すると間違った情報を複製することがあり、それによって細胞ががん化したり、さまざまま病気や老化の原因になることが分かってきました。 体内で合成される核酸は、加齢やストレスなどで合成能力が衰えるため、こういったミスコピーが起こりやすくなります。そのため、食事などで核酸を摂り入れることで健康維持や老化防止につながると考えられています。 また、近年はタンパク質に翻訳されないノンコーティングRNAにまで研究領域が広がり、遺伝子発現をコントロールする「核酸医薬」が世界中の医学者により研究開発され、これまで不可能だった病気の治療が可能になりつつあります。当書では、その最新の研究成果を明らかにしていきます。
