Textgrundlage ist die Ausgabe: E.T.A. Hoffmann: Poetische Werke in sechs B�nden, Band 2, Berlin: Aufbau, 1963. Die Paginierung obiger Ausgabe wird in dieser Neuausgabe als Marginalie zeilengenau mitgef�hrt. Umschlaggestaltung von Thomas Schultz-Overhage unter Verwendung des Bildes: E.T.A. Hoffmann, Der Sandmann, 1817. Gesetzt aus Minion Pro, 11 pt. �ber den Autor: 1776 in K�nigsberg auf die Vornamen Ernst Theodor Wilhelm getauft, nennt er sich sp�ter aus Verehrung f�r Mozart Ernst Theodor Amadeus oder kurz E.T.A. Hoffmann. Er studiert Jura in K�nigsberg, wird Referendar am Berliner Kammergericht, wegen Karikaturen auf preu�ische Offiziere strafversetzt nach Polen und schlie�lich Kapellmeister in Bamberg. Bis er 1814 nach Berlin zur�ckkehrt widmet er sein k�nstlerisches Schaffen vornehmlich der Musik. Er wird zum Kammergerichtsrat berufen, gr�ndet den Serapinenorden und schreibt seine gro�en Romane, Die Elixiere des Teufels und die Lebensansichten des Katers Murr, sowie zahlreiche Erz�hlungen, deren vorletzte, der Meister Floh, beschlagnahmt wird, weil der preu�ische Polizeidirektor in der Figur des Knarrpanti eine Satire auf seine Person sieht. 1822 erkrankt E.T.A. Hoffmann schwer und diktiert - v�llig gel�hmt - vom Sterbebett aus die Erz�hlung Des Vetters Eckfenster, in der der gro�e Romantiker sich dem kritischen Realismus ann�hert bevor er am 25. Juni in Berlin stirbt.
