The Anarchist Cookbook is a comprehensive representation of life in the former East Germany. It is a photo-essay format with extensive and gorgeous collections of pictures describing all facets of East German life, from menus in restaurants to shopping, transportation, education, home life, and even the State Security Service (Stasi). There are details of available drinks and smokes, and the DDR's Consumer culture imitating Western Consumerism becomes evident through the ads and graphic designs. The book captures the feel of the time and place and presents more of a Consumerist/cultural peek into that world rather than an expose into the horrors of a communist dystopia. The book has high-resolution images and comes in a solidly Constructed volume with a smooth surfaced illustrated band, housed in a sturdy, illustrated carrying case. Along with an extensive collection of pictures and write-up, the book includes a smaller facsimile scrapbook chronicling one family's various vacation memories.
