Multigenerational Editorial Review
**** The novel "Well, That Was Awkward" by Rachel Vail captures the chaotic and often humorous landscape of middle school life, making it a delightful read for a young audience. Set against the vibrant backdrop of the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the story intertwines themes of young love, friendship, and honesty with a clever twist on the classic tale of Cyrano de Bergerac—this time featuring a middle-school girl navigating a complex love rectangle. Readers have expressed their fondness for Vail’s sharp dialogue and authentic character portrayals, which evoke both nostalgia and empathy. The main character, Gracie, resonates strongly with many, as she embodies the trials and tribulations of adolescence. The book handles themes of first crushes and emotional growth, appealing particularly to readers aged 10 to 14. Highlights include relatable experiences of romantic angst, lighthearted drama, and a touching subplot involving family dynamics. While some reviewers noted the absence of diverse representation and heavy themes, the narrative remains light and accessible—making it suitable as a wholesome read for younger audiences. With its engaging humor and emotional depth, "Well, That Was Awkward" is recommended for both middle school students and those who wish to revisit their own formative years. **Pros and Cons:** **
