- Moğolların yükselme ve yayılma döneminde doğan Kubilay Han (1215-1294), dedesi Cengiz Han’ın ölümünden sonra imparatorluğunun oğulları arasındaki bölüşümünde iktidar rüyasına en uzak torunlar arasında kalmıştı. Ancak akıllı ittifak stratejisi ve uygun hamlelerle devreye giren annesi Sorgotani Beki sayesinde bahtına, 1260 yılında Ulu Kağan olarak Moğolların başına geçmek düştü. Devraldığı imparatorluğu yeni fetihlerle genişletti, Pasifik kıyısından Orta Avrupa’ya kadar uzanan kesintisiz topraklarıyla tarihin gelmiş geçmiş en büyük devleti haline getirdi. Bu fetihler sırasında yüz binlerce, belki de milyonlarca insanın ölümüne yol açtı. Kubilay Han 1279 yılında Çin’i tamamen ele geçirince, göçer bir fatih olarak kalmak yerine eskiden beri ilgilendiği bu kalabalık ve gelişkin uygarlığı etkin biçimde yönetmeye çalıştı. Bunun için Moğolların farklı dinlere saygı gösterme geleneğiyle yabancı danışmanlar kullanma yaklaşımını, kendi Çince bilgisi ve yönetim yeteneğiyle birleştiren bir idare kurdu. Yeni bir başkent inşa etti, yeni yasalar yaptı, bütün Moğol topraklarında kullanılmak üzere bir yazı dili geliştirdi. Tiyatroyu, sanatı, her türlü zanaat ve ustalığı, bilimi ve tıbbı destekledi. Eskiden kalma Büyük Kanal’ı uzatarak başkent Ta-tu’ya (bugünkü Pekin) bağladı. Seyyahlar, Asya’yı baştan sona kat etmeye, onun döneminde başladı. Ünlü İtalyan seyyah Marco Polo’nun Batılılara anlattığı Asya, onun yönetimi altındaki kıtadır. Fetihlerinde büyük başarı kazanan Kubilay Han, sadece Vietnam ile Japonya’ya boyun eğdirememiştir. Özellikle ömrünün sonlarına doğru, karısı Çabi’nin ölümünün ardından gelen Japonya felaketi, kendini iyice içkiye ve yemeğe vermesine, saraya kapanmasına neden oldu. Ölümünün ardından o koskoca imparatorluk, neredeyse kurulduğu hızla dağılmıştır. Prof. Morris Rossabi, Kubilay Han’ın Seyyahı dahil olmak üzere kitaplarıyla dünya çapında ilgi uyandıran bir Çin ve Orta Asya tarihi uzmanıdır.
