The Plustek OpticBook 4800 Book Scanner is a device that meets expectations when scanning books, but many reported problems are with the accompanying software. The scanner works quickly and has high contrast, but the software included is inadequate and frustrating. It forces the user to make a test scan every time they want to configure settings and doesn't explain what each modifier does. The help function was described as an "useless maze of menu/sub-menus," meaning there was no real guidance available. The scanner has button controls, which work well, and Page Manager makes good PDFs, but the scanner is reported to have failed multiple times. The device's Construction is sturdy, but the software is Considered amateurish and an afterthought, missing things like good configuration features, OCR from a PDF, and auto-cropping that shortens each scan after each page. Some positive remarks are that the scanner works well for scanning books and creates high-quality PDF files. The software authors need to go back to school, is the opinion of a customer who is a serious user and wants to make precise adjustments on scans but is expected to purchase an earlier version of the software. Nonetheless, it is compatible with Windows 10 and remains a great scanner even after almost six years of continued use.
